Overview

Saigon City & Cu Chi Tunnels
Ho Chi Minh city
Formerly known as Saigon, today Ho Chi Minh is the bustling and vibrating economic center of the south. Over the past few centuries, Saigon was called the “Pearl of the Far East” and was an important trading center for the Chinese, Japanese and Western merchants who traveled up the Saigon River.

HCM City is only 300 years old but there are many human and historical values created by the exchange of different cultures. The culture of the former Saigon and present-day HCM City shows an original characteristic of the Vietnamese culture and nation in the historical and geographical context of the country’s southern region. It is possible to say that Saigon-HCM City is a convergence of many cultural flows during its process of establishment and development.

Among of its famous beauty spots and cultural-historical places in the city, these sites are worth a visit during your time in Sai Gon: Reunification Palace, Central Post Office, Notre Dame Cathedral, Saigon Zoo, Dam Sen Park, Suoi Tien Park, Museum of History, Museum of Revolutions, Cu Chi Tunnels.

Cu Chi Tunnels
The area of Cu Chi was one of the most pro-communist districts in the far south; indeed the VC used the tunnels to organize the 1968 Tet Offensive. During the American War, the entire area of Cu Chi was designated a free fire zone and was heavily bombarded: you can still see numerous craters caused by 500 pound B52bombs.

It was this persistant bombing campaign that drove many of the residents of Cu Chi together with the Viet Cong underground. Originally, the tunnels had been created as far back as 1948 to help combat the French. Now they were rapidly expanded to include innumerable trap doors, specially constructed living areas, storage facilities, weapons factories, field hospitals, command centre, kitchens and even schools.

Today the remaining tunnels of this intricate network have been widened to accommodate the larger western frame and have now become a major tourist attraction giving the visitor a unique experience of what underground life in the American war must have been like and a deep appreciation of the courage and ingenuity of the Vietnamese people.

Day 1 Departure 7:30AM - Back to Sai Gon 4:00PM

Journey out of the city centre to the Cu Chi regions, where you will visit the vast underground network of tunnels built first as a defence against the French, and later expanded during the American war. It was from here that the North Vietnamese waged their guerrilla warfare and you will marvel at their ingenuity and resilience. See secret trapdoors, underground kitchens, living areas and meeting rooms. The more adventurous may explore the deeper second, and even third level tunnels. For those preferring to remain above ground, there is ample opportunity to view excavated areas from above. Your guide will advise you of the length and level of difficulty of each tunnel before entering - some are easily accessed by stairs. We recommend good walking shoes and sun protection for this tour and advise you may get a little dirty! Back the city for lunch at the local restaurant.

Afternoon, join the essential highlight tour of Saigon, visit the former Presidential Palace, which is now preserved as a museum, including the underground communications bunkers, headquarters for the Saigon Government during the American War.
